A wide angle lens is wonderful as a person takes pictures inside. When taking pictures of an interior setting, a wide angle lens will give the impression of a larger room. The point-and-shoot cameras have the limitation that they do not go very wide. To get as wide a view of a room as possible, the 90 degree to 100 degree lens is advised. A highly recommended wide lens is the Sigma 12-24, used with whatever 35mm camera is desired. It will make possible over a 90 degree picture. The Nikon D40 has a somewhat limited ability to go wide but the VR 18-55 lens kit with it is recommended. Another recommendation is the Ricoh GX100, with lens equivalent to 24mm.
It has been suggested that if a wide angle lens is wider than 17 mm there will be a distortion. To assist the photographer using a wide angle lens a CD is enclosed when Panasonic, Canon, Nikon and other camera brands are sold. That CD is a program that gives instructions on how to stitch photographs together. Canonstitch is the overlap tool with Canon and with Panasonic the overlap program is Arcsoft. These tools are not a substitute for a wide angle lens, but an idea to augment its use.
As far as angle or perspective, another recommendation is to vary the position from which the picture is being shot by standing on stairs. The angle is only one of several components of a good photograph. Time of day and lighting need to be considered. The other parts of a good picture include the exposure and the overall composition. Just remember, for great pictures inside, the wide angle lens will go a long way in making the room look wonderful.
